Old Sodbury by Sophie Livingston
This final poem in the ‘Terrain’ series was written after I spent a long summer walking the Cotswold Way that runs from Chipping Campden in the north Cotswolds to Bath in the south with my husband, Jo. It had been a fraught time for both of us, and we’d spent a lot of the 100 miles thinking and talking about the stress going on in our lives. Walking always helps us get our lives in perspective – but the moment described in the poem when we took tea in the graveyard was one of those miraculous ones when all our worries suddenly seemed trivial.
How wonderful to rest awhile between thought amongst the living and the dead. What excellent company to keep after a weary walk? I wish that I had joined you and Jo on your pilgrimage along the escarpment from the wintery north to the summery south.
I loved the feeling of warm, hazy summer days that fills this poem, yet unspoken! It is such a thought-filled, yet restful poem that you almost float through it. An English churchyard is a very special place of peace and calm, and this poem paints a beautiful picture! Thank you Sophie!
Thanks so much Helen – much appreciated x
